It’s fight week! GGG and Canelo will finally be back in the ring for their trilogy fight just over 4 years since the second fight between the pair fought in 2018. Canelo vs GGG III will take place this Saturday, September 17th at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, the same location as their previous two fights.
The first fight in September of 2017 was controversial because the vast majority of fans and critics scored the fight for GGG, but one of the judges at ringside gave the nod to Canelo with an indefensible 118-110 scorecard. Another judge scored the fight 115-113 for GGG and the third judge scored it a draw, so split draw was the final result. There was plenty of controversy following the scoring and a rematch was quickly booked for March, but then in January, Canelo tested positive for PED’s and was suspended for 6 months. The rematch then took place in September of 2018 with Canelo winning a majority decision after two judges scored the fight 115-113 in favor of Canelo, while the third judge scored the fight 114-114. This was also a controversial result because once again the majority of fans and media members felt that GGG won the fight.
Four years later there are plenty of story lines and scores to be settled heading into this trilogy fight. Canelo has been much more active over the past four years continuing to take big fights and win belts, while GGG has flown more under the radar taking fewer and less high profile fights before earning an impressive TKO win over Ryota Murata this past April to solidify this fight with Canelo.
