The 2019-20 NBA season is about to restart after a four month hiatus. The twenty-two teams who still have a shot at the playoffs have gathered in a bubble in Orlando to play 8 more regular season games before the first round of the playoffs gets underway on August 17th.
The Bucks and Lakers were leading the two conferences when the NBA stopped play in March, and they along with the LA Clippers, are the three favourites to win the NBA Championship heading into the restart. The Toronto Raptors were third in the league with 46 wins (2 more than the Clippers) at the stoppage, but they are being overlooked by NBA Championship bettors and are currently the seventh favourites according to some oddsmakers with 20-1 odds.
Having the NBA restart in August, with an eventual NBA Champion being crowned in early October will definitely liven up the summer from a sports betting perspective. I expect a lot of NBA betting to occur over the summer months, which is why I wanted to create this beginners guide to betting on this NBA restart. On this page I will look at the current NBA Championship odds to kick off the restart, breakdown some of the popular bets you can make on an NBA game and also give you a simple 3 step guide to follow when you’re ready to place your first NBA bet.
2020 NBA Championship Betting Odds
Here is a screenshot from SportsInteraction.com of the current NBA Championship odds heading into the restart:
The Raptors are 14-1 here, but you can also get them at 20-1 at BetOnline.ag. Because SIA is a Canadian betting site their odds on the Raptors may be shorter than other books.
As you can see the Lakers, Bucks and Clippers are the three favourites, by a significant margin. That said, I would not count out the Raptors, Rockets, Celtics, Sixers or Nuggets heading into this restart. Even the Mavericks at 40-1 could be a good bet if Doncic and Porzingis catch fire.
Popular NBA Betting Options
The three most popular bets in a basketball game are the point spread, money line and over/under bets. Let’s look at a quick example of each using a screenshot from Sports Interaction for a game between Boston and Milwaukee.
In this example there is a 4 point spread in this game in favour of Milwaukee. This is indicated by the (-4) beside Milwaukee and the (+4) beside Boston. A spread bet on Milwaukee wins if the Bucks win the game by 5 or more points, while a spread bet on the Celtics wins if Boston either wins the game outright or loses by 3 or fewer. If the Bucks win by exactly 4 then the bet is returned and graded as a “push”.
The money line bet is a straight up wager on which team will win the game. The odds vary depending on if the team is the favourite or the underdog. In this example, we already knew that Milwaukee was 4 point favourites, so it’s no surprise that there money line odds are just 1.56. This means that any bet amount can be multiplied by 1.56 to find the payout of a Bucks win. For example, a $100 bet on the Bucks would payout $156 for winnings of $56 if they won the game. On the flip side a $100 bet on the Celtics would payout $250 for winnings of $150 if the Celtics pulled off the upset.
The over/under is a wager on the total number of points to be scored in the game by both teams combined. The over/under for this game is set at 205.5. If 206 or more points are scored then the over bets would payout, while if 205 or fewer points are scored in the game then the under bets would payout.
Check out our basketball betting page for a more detailed breakdown of each of these wagers.
