The 2023-24 NFL season will run from September 7th, 2023 to January 7th, 2024. The playoffs then get underway on January 14th with Super Bowl LVIII scheduled for February 11th, 2024 at Allegiant Stadium in Nevada.
I expect plenty of Canadians will be looking to get action on the NFL throughout the fall and winter months. For this reason, I wanted to get this page up explaining how to bet on the NFL from here in Canada. On this page I will take a look at the Super Bowl odds heading into the 2023 NFL season, break down the three main bets you can make on an NFL game and provide a simple 3 step guide to get your bets in quickly at our top rated betting site for Canadians.
2024 Super Bowl Betting Odds
Here’s a screenshot from SportsInteraction.com with the Super Bowl odds heading into the 23-24 season (odds taken on September 5th, 2023):
I included the 18 teams with 40/1 or better odds heading into the season. The Chiefs are favourites to defend their Super Bowl title, while the Eagles, Bills, 49ers and Bengals are the other main contenders with odds shorter of 10-1 or shorter to win the 2024 Super Bowl.
The Super Bowl odds for each team will change as the season progresses. Check out the up to date odds at SportsInteraction.com by opening the ‘Football’ drop down menu and selecting ‘NFL Futures’.
Typical NFL Betting Options
There are three bets that get the vast majority of action in an NFL game. Those include the point spread, money line and over/under (aka Total). Below I’ll take a look at an upcoming NFL game and explain each of these main three betting options using a Bills vs Rams game from last season as an example.
Point Spread
In this example, the Bills are 2.5 point favourites on the road, which is shown by the -2.5 as their point spread. This means that they must win the game by 3 or more points for a point spread bet on Buffalo to pay out winnings. On the flip side the Rams are +2.5 underdogs. If the Rams either win the game outright or lose by 2 or fewer points then a spread bet on the Rams would be a winner.
Spread bets generally carry odds of 1.91, but they can vary a little bit. Check out our betting odds info page if you don’t know how to read the decimal odds shown.
Money Line
The money line bet is a straight up wager on which team will win the game outright. The odds indicate the payout of a win for either team with the underdog having a larger potential payout than a bet on the favourite.
In this example the Rams have odds of 2.17 to win the game, which means a $100 bet would payout $217 if LA pulled off the minor upset. On the flip side a $100 bet would only pay out $171 if the Bills win this game.
Over/Under
The over/under is a wager on the total number of points to be scored in the football game, by both teams combined. The over/under in this game is set at 52. If 53 or more points are scored in the game then bets on the over would payout, while if 51 or fewer points are scored then the under would pay out. If exactly 52 points are scored all over/under wagers would be returned.
