How To Bet On The MLB From Canada

By Baseball

When the other big Canadian sports die down in the summer months there are still MLB games to bet on every single day. And if the Toronto Blue Jays are having a good year, then the MLB really does take center stage through the summer here in Canada.

The 2023 MLB season will run from March 30th to October 1st, with all teams playing a full 162 game schedule. The MLB post season will begin on October 3rd with the World Series taking place in late October.

This page is meant to explain how to bet on MLB games and then walk you through placing your first bet. I will recommend our top rated betting site for Canadians, look at the three most popular MLB bets you can make and then provide a simple 3 step guide you can follow to place an MLB bet online with minutes.

Popular MLB Betting Options

There are three main bets that take the majority of MLB betting action. These are the moneyline, over/under and run line bets. These three bets are prominently shown for each game at Sports Interaction and I will quickly break each down with examples below.

Money Line

With the money line you are simply betting on which team will win the game. The odds will indicate your risk vs reward for betting on either team, with betting on the favourite paying out less than betting on the underdog.

Here’s an example using a Blue Jays vs Rangers game from last season.:

In this example the Blue Jays are favourites at the Rogers Center. A $100 wager on the Blue Jays to win outright would payout $136 (100*1.36), while a $100 bet on the Rangers would payout $330 (100*3.30).

Check out our “how to read sports betting odds” page if you don’t understand how we got to those payouts.

Over/Under

The over/under, also known as the totals, is a bet on the total number of runs to be scored in the game. The oddsmaker sets a “total” and you can bet on whether the number of runs in the game will be over or under that number.

Let’s look at the Blue Jays vs Rangers game again:

The over/under for this game is set at 9 runs. If 10 or more runs are scored by both teams combined the “over” bets would payout. If 8 or fewer runs are scored then the “under” bets would payout. If exactly 9 runs are scored in the game the over/under bets would push and be refunded.

Run Line

The run line is basically the “point spread” in the MLB, except that it is always set at 1.5 runs. The team favored to win will have a run line of (-1.5) which means they would have to win the game by 2 or more runs for their run line bets to payout. The underdogs would have a run line of (+1.5), which means they would have to either win the game outright or lose by 1 run.

In this example, the Rangers are the underdogs as indicated by the +1.5 run line. As you can see the run line evens out the game a little bit when comparing the decimal odds of the run line to the money line odds.

So, a $100 bet on the Rangers run line would payout $225 if they either won the game or lost by 1. A $100 bet on the Blue Jays run line would payout $165 if they won by 2 or more.
