PSG defeated Arsenal in last year’s Champions League Final, with the match finishing 1-1 before PSG won 4-3 on penalties at the Puskas Arena in Budapest. The result made PSG back-to-back champions and only the second club after Real Madrid to defend the title in the Champions League era. PSG are among the favourites once again, along with Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Arsenal, at the start of the 2026-27 Champions League tournament.
This is the third year with the new Champions League format. There is a 36 team league phase which sees each team playing 8 games against different opponents, with all teams ranked in a single joint group. This expanded the competition from 125 matches under the old group stage format to 189 matches. The top 8 teams from the league phase advance to the round of 16, while the teams ranked 9th to 24th compete in a two-legged play-off round to qualify for the round of 16, and the teams ranked 25th to 36th are eliminated from the competition.

Champions League Winner Odds
I’m updating this article in early-September, just as the 2026-27 Champions League league phase begins. The league phase runs until January 27th, 2027, followed by 24 teams progressing to the knockout stage, with the final scheduled to take place on June 5th, 2027 at the Estadio Metropolitano in Madrid.
