How To Bet On The Melbourne Cup in Canada

By Horse Racing

The Melbourne Cup is Australia’s most famous horse race, a Group 1 handicap run over 3,200 metres (about 2 miles) at Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne. First run in 1861, it is known as “the race that stops a nation,” with a public holiday in metropolitan Melbourne and much of the country tuning in. Because it is a handicap, the better-credentialed horses carry more weight, which keeps the race wide open and makes it one of the great betting races on the calendar. Knight’s Choice won it as a long shot in 2024, and Half Yours took the 2025 edition.

The 2026 running, the 166th Melbourne Cup, goes Tuesday, November 3rd at 3:00pm local time in Melbourne. Because Melbourne is 16 hours ahead of Eastern time, that works out to Monday, November 2nd at 11:00pm ET (8:00pm PT) for Canadians. This page is a simple guide for Canadians who want to bet the Melbourne Cup online, including where to bet, a look at the 2026 futures odds, the leading contenders, and a step-by-step guide to placing your wager.

Bet365 is our top-rated sportsbook for Canadians looking to bet on the Melbourne Cup. It has deep coverage of Australian racing and is the official online betting partner of Woodbine Entertainment, so it is built for a big international race like this one.

For bettors outside Ontario, Bet365.com offers fixed-odds futures markets on the Melbourne Cup, plus each-way betting that really comes into its own in a 24-horse field. Futures simply means you can back a horse days or weeks out at a fixed price, locking in your value before the market shortens. Fixed odds mean you keep the price you took at the moment you placed your bet, with no fluctuation from the pari-mutuel pool.

Ontario players bet a little differently. Bet365.ca is the only regulated Ontario sportsbook that lets you wager on the Melbourne Cup, through its partnership with Woodbine Entertainment. Ontario bets are routed into Woodbine’s pari-mutuel tote (the same international race pools offered through HPIbet) and processed under Woodbine’s federal pari-mutuel licence, so instead of a fixed price you take the final tote odds. You’ll see an “Operated by Woodbine Entertainment Group” note in the horse racing section confirming everything is fully legal and regulated.

Wherever you are in the country, Bet365 covers the full range of Melbourne Cup bet types, from win, place and each-way through to exacta, trifecta and the multi-race pools, and you can stream the race live in the app.

The final field of 24 and the barrier draw are confirmed on Saturday, October 31st, so a few of the horses listed in the futures market will not make the race. Once the field is set, the regular win, place and show prices, along with every other Melbourne Cup betting market, are found on the Horse Racing page under the Australian racing listings. Select the Flemington card and then the Melbourne Cup race # to pull up the full racecard and all available bet types.

Point Of Law is the 2026 favourite at 6.50. The lightly raced import won the Geelong Cup over 2,400 metres on his Australian debut, and even after picking up a weight penalty for that win, he still carries just 53kg, a big edge in a handicap. Trustyourinstinct is next at 7.50 and arrives from Ireland, where he won the Curragh Cup over 2,800 metres before running fourth in the Irish St Leger. He has proven staying form but carries 57kg, near the top of the weights.

The value sits just behind the top two. Hopewell Rock, at 10.00, finished second in the Ebor at York, one of Europe’s richest staying handicaps, and the step up to 2 miles is expected to suit. He goes into the Cup fresh off a break since that run. Shockletz is also 10.00 after winning the Archer Stakes over 2,500 metres at Flemington, and she carries the lightest weight of the leading contenders at 51kg. Juja Kibo, at 15.00, may be the most in-form horse in the race, with back-to-back wins in The Metropolitan at Randwick and the Moonee Valley Gold Cup over 2,500 metres, the latter run at Flemington. Defiantly, at 12.00, won the Prix Kergorlay over 3,000 metres at Deauville by five and a half lengths and was second over 4,000 metres at Royal Ascot, so stamina is not a question. James J Braddock is also 12.00 after running third in the Epsom Derby earlier this year.

Middle Earth is 15.00, with Enfjaar and Sons And Lovers at 23.00, and Goodie Two Shoes, Mr Monaco and So You Are at 26.00. 2024 winner Knight’s Choice is back again at 51.00. Two horses have already been ruled out: Saint George was scratched after failing pre-race veterinary scans, and Japanese runner Stinger Glass has also been withdrawn.

The Melbourne Cup is a handicap, so pay attention to weight. A horse carrying 51kg or 53kg is getting a real break over the 57kg runners across 3,200 metres. And with 24 horses going to post and four places paying out, each-way betting earns its keep here, paying out even if your horse only runs fourth.
