How To Bet On The World Cup from Canada

By Soccer

The 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup takes place in New Zealand and Australia beginning on July 20th, 2023. Check out our how to bet on the Women’s World Cup page for more details about how to bet on the Canadian women.

The 2022 FIFA World Cup group stage and first knockout round are complete in Qatar. The remaining 8 teams will now battle it out through the single elimination bracket until a winner is crowned in the World Cup Finals on December 18th.

Canada won the CONCACAF qualifying group to book their spot in the World Cup for the first time since 1986. Canada drew a Group F that includes Belgium, Croatia, and Morocco, and unfortunately they were not able to advance to the knockout stage.

Canada did not get the results they wanted at the World Cup, but they played a beautiful style of attacking soccer that gained the respect of international soccer fans. Canada’s core pieces will remain with the team and look to make a deeper run on home soil in 2026.

The World Cup is the biggest sporting event in the world every four years. It captures the imagination of people from across the globe, and even with Canada having been eliminated the World Cup knockout rounds will still generate a lot of excitement and wagering here in Canada.  For this reason I wanted to create this page and provide a simple 3 step guide for any Canadians interested in placing World Cup bets, as well as break down some of the betting options you have.

Fun Fact: The World Cup garners more than double the interest in Canada than the Super Bowl according to Google Trends.

World Cup Betting Options

Before getting into the steps to place your World Cup bet online, let’s first take a look at the different bets you can make on the tournament.

Individual Match Betting

Let’s take a look at the odds for Canada’s final match vs Morocco as an example of the bets you can make on a World Cup match (Canada ended up losing this match 2-1, but I will still use it for the examples below):

  • Match Result – Also known as the money line or 1×2, this is simply a bet on the outcome of the match. The odds determine the potential payout for each outcome. In the above example Morocco is the favourite to win the game. A $100 bet on Morocco would payout $214 (win $114) if they won the game. Canada is the underdog with odds of 3.03. A $100 bet on Canada would payout $303 (win $203) if they pulled off the minor upset in their final match.
  • Over/Under – Also known as total goals, this is a bet on the number of goals scored in the match. The oddsmaker sets a total (in this case 2.5) and you can bet on whether the number of goals scored by both teams will be over or under that amount.

**In the knockout rounds SportsInteraction.com also offers betting lines on which team will simply advance to the next round.

World Cup Winner Odds

The main futures wager you can make on the 2022 World Cup, is wagering on which team will win the tournament.  Below are the odds for which nation will win the 2022 World Cup after the round of 16 (odds taken on December 8th – before the quarterfinals).  This futures wager will be available throughout the tournament.  The odds will vary depending on the perceived chances of each nation to win the tournament.
